Pinakotheken

From Dürer to Warhol. The Pinakotheken in Munich

Together with the Sammlung Schack and Museum Brandhorst, the three Pinakotheken form a unique museum complex featuring art ranging in date from the Middle Ages to the present day. With combined holdings of over 25,000 paintings, they preside over one of the largest museum collections in the world.

In the Alte Pinakothek the walls are filled with one masterpiece after another. Dürer’s iconic self-portrait, the only oil painting by Leonardo in Germany and one of the most comprehensive Rubens collections attract hundreds of thousands of visitors to the museum every year.

The Neue Pinakothek is similarly home to a ‘blockbuster exhibition’ on permanent display, where artists including Van Gogh and Goya, Friedrich and Turner, Manet, Cézanne, and Monet demonstrate the artistic wealth of the 19th century.

The Pinakothek der Moderne, meanwhile, boasts the most important Beckmann-collection in Europe, outstanding works by Kirchner, Klee, Beuys, Baselitz, Polke, Flavin, Rauch, Shore, Eggleston, and Wall.

The Museum Brandhorst is internationally known for having the world’s largest collections of works by Warhol and Twombly. Special exhibitions with broad appeal draw a mainly young crowd to the striking, modern museum building.

Pictures of legends and fairy tales speak of distant lands and times past. After a period of renovation, the museum in the Prinzregentenstrasse invites visitors to explore the visions and ideas of the German Romantics of the 19th century.
